Comparison to other systems:

Coatings Care is a management system integrating health, safety and environmental management with other disciplines such as transport and product stewardship. ISO 9001: 2000 and ISO 14000 are, likewise, management systems and contain similar approaches to the management of quality and environmental issues. The Coatings Care initiative, to a large extent, reflects the direction of the ISO 9001 standard inasmuch as it is a proactive system aimed at continuous improvement at a rate decided by the executive management of the company. The Environmental Management Code of Coatings Care is, likewise, closely aligned with ISO 14000, containing many of the same requirements.

Coatings Care is fully compatible with the chemical industry's Responsible Care® program. Both programs are committed to providing a high level of protection to employees, customers and the public, and for the environment, through the safe manufacture, distribution, disposal, handling and use of materials. There are, in several countries, Memoranda of Understanding, that recognize the equivalence of the programs.

Responsible Care® and Coatings Care are complementary in their aims, objectives and approaches to the management of health, safety and the environment. In fact, it can be said, "Coatings Care is Responsible Care® for the coatings industry".

Coatings Care contains a number of important components also present in ISO 9001; three key elements are:

  • Involvement of Top Management
  • Measurement of Continuous Improvement
  • Emphasis on Customers

The ISO 9001 standard and the BCF Coatings Care initiative are mutually complimentary and in management terms both are committed to improving efficiency, planning and reducing costs/waste. All or the management systems require consideration of risk and the introduction of controls. The process of self-assessment shows a connection between health, safety environment and quality. Controls for one of these activities will nearly always impact on the others.

Due to the overlap of the systems, it is quite possible to create one integrated management system. This can result in:

  • Less Duplication
  • Saving of Resources
  • Easier implementation of any relevant standard
  • The option of a single audit

An integrated system can increase profitability by

  • Improving Efficiency Reducing Waste (Loss Prevention)
  • Minimizing mistakes
  • Allowing Measurement and Control
  • Risk Management

ISO 14000 is also fully compatible with Coatings Care and can also be included in the integration.
